Chỉ lối văn chương dùng để làm quan thì thường chuộng sự bóng bẩy, khuôn phép, còn lối làm thơ phú để thi cử thì thường nhằm phô diễn tài học, chữ nghĩa. Thành ngữ được dùng để nhận xét đặc điểm, phong cách của từng loại sáng tác gắn với con đường công danh xưa.
